Zaju, Yuan Drama
Yuan zaju is the northern drama of thirteenth-century Dadu, built in four acts, one mode per act and a single singing role

Time and place
Zaju flourished in thirteenth-century Dadu, today's Beijing, with Pingyang in Shanxi as another centre. It grew out of Song-Jin variety plays and zhugongdiao, peaked in the early Yuan and declined as a northern form in the Ming, though writers continued. Guan Hanqing, Ma Zhiyuan, Bai Pu and Zheng Guangzu are later grouped as the four masters of Yuan drama.
What happened
Zaju combined song, speech, gesture and combat into one play, usually four zhe plus a xiezi. Each zhe used one gongdiao, with qupai linked into a suite and no change of mode inside the act. One role, the zhengmo or zhengdan, did the singing, while other characters spoke and acted. Guan Hanqing's Dou E Yuan and Wang Shifu's Xixiang Ji are standard examples; the latter runs to five books and twenty-one zhe.
Musical features
Northern tunes use a heptatonic scale, pack many syllables into short phrases and move briskly, with a firm, upright character. Aria groups follow gongdiao, and the order of qupai within an act carries fixed mood and pacing. Pipa, flute, drum and clapper lead the band, with gongs and sheng added as needed. Spoken passages alternate with song; the music serves the drama rather than standing alone.
What to listen for
Hear Shanxi Wugeng, where a pentatonic local tune carries heptatonic touches and a hard northern edge. Then hear the shadow-play tune, with clear upper and lower phrases that show the logic of banqiang. Finally hear Hebei Bangzi Hao, whose high northern delivery sits close to the feel of Yuan drama. None is zaju; they lend local colour to an imagined northern stage.
Common misunderstandings
Zaju is often taken as the ancestor of Peking opera. It is a Yuan northern drama, while Peking opera formed only in the Qing; they share some qupai and banqiang experience but do not form a straight line. Others assume every zaju has four acts, though Xixiang Ji has five books. Nor is zaju only literature; its gongdiao suites and single-singer convention are musical facts.
