Yangzhou Opera
Yangju fused Yangzhou flower-drum plays with qingqu suites, its Shuzhuangtai tune carrying Jianghuai stories

Time and place
Yangju belongs to Yangzhou, Zhenjiang, Nanjing and Shanghai. Both of its sources are Yangzhou arts, the flower-drum plays known as Weiyang civil drama and the seated qingqu suite singing. The two strands merged in Shanghai in the 1930s, and the name yangju was fixed in the 1950s.
What happened
Yangzhou qingqu was seated qupai singing, with several performers dividing roles and no costume; flower-drum plays were small two- or three-role pieces for temple fairs and household gatherings. After the merger, yangju could sing a full qingqu suite and also stage a plotted play. The repertory includes The Jade Dragonfly, The Pearl Pagoda and Bai Sui Guashuai, as well as Pi Wu Lazi, a clown-centred piece about a Yangzhou rogue and his neighbours.
Musical features
Qupai form dominates. Shuzhuangtai is the core, taking seven- or ten-character lines over one beat and three eyes, with paired phrases repeated; Bugang, Tanqin, Jian Dian Hua, Xianhua diao, Yinniu si and Ku Xiaolang each carry a different tone. Later banqiang devices, dalu ban, shu ban and duizi, speed up narration. The lead is an erhu with pipa, sanxian, flute and clappers. Speech is Yangzhou dialect, clear in articulation, and the clown's spoken passages carry real weight.
What to listen for
Begin with Jiangsu Shuzhuangtai, the tune of that name, hearing the rise and fall of its four-line stanzas and the fixed closing notes. Then Xianhua diao, a ditty with variants across Jiangnan, to hear how the same frame takes different words. Ku Xiaolang is a lament; follow its broken phrases and falling slides. All three are folk songs, not yangju arias.
Common misunderstandings
Yangju is often taken for a medley of Yangzhou folk tunes, or confused with Huaiju. It has role types and full-length plays, and uses banqiang devices alongside qupai. Huaiju belongs to the Yancheng and Huai'an area, with different speech and a different lead instrument.
