The Symphonie fantastique Premiere

Paris, 1830, where Berlioz told an opium dream in five movements with one recurring theme.

A programme was handed to the audience, and the symphony could now tell a specific story, one about its own composer.

Time and place

5 December 1830, the hall of the Paris Conservatoire. Habeneck conducted, and Berlioz was twenty-six. In the summer of that same year he had finally won the Prix de Rome.

What happened

The work has five movements and came with a first-person programme. An artist takes too much opium, sees his beloved in a dream, and passes through a ball, a field, the scaffold and a witches' sabbath. One theme runs through all five movements; Berlioz called it the idee fixe, and each appearance changes its character. After the premiere he revised the score repeatedly, and the versions of 1831 and 1845 differ in orchestration and movement order.

What changed

Programme music stopped being music with an explanation attached and became a way of telling a story through form. The fixed idea carries memory and narrative at once, holding the movements together. The orchestra became a palette, with cor anglais, harps, bass drum and bells entering the normal ensemble. Because the composer wrote the programme himself, part of the work's meaning moved into words, and audiences began to read a note before hearing a symphony. Liszt's symphonic poems and Wagner's music dramas stand on this extension.

Listen for the turn

The library holds no recording of the Symphonie fantastique, so these three works by the same composer set the coordinates. Begin with the Dies irae of the Requiem, where brass and chorus open the space in layers. Then Villanelle, light in melody but restless in harmony, like a dance remembered wrong. Finally Le spectre de la rose, where the voice is carried almost entirely by the instruments. All three share the orchestral and harmonic taste of 1830, and hearing them before rereading the programme makes that year easier to understand.

This turn belongs to Romantic and connects 柏辽兹, Program Music and 交响诗的发明.
