Soul Jazz
Gospel and blues flavour, with an organ trio cooking at a slow simmer.
Related
Soul jazz joined hard bop to gospel, blues and R&B in the 1950s and 1960s, making jazz that could fill a dance floor and leave room to solo.
Origins and era
In the mid-1950s Jimmy Smith formed a Hammond B-3 trio with guitar and drums, recording slow grooves for Blue Note and Prestige. Horace Silver's The Preacher brought gospel chords into hard bop; Lee Morgan's The Sidewinder and Cannonball Adderley's Mercy, Mercy, Mercy reached the pop charts. Ramsey Lewis's The In Crowd also reached radio.
What you hear
Tempos usually sit mid-range, with a shuffle or funk backbeat and clear snare accents. The organ fills harmony with long tones and slides, the guitar comps in short chops, and the tenor plays blues-tinged phrases. A tune often rides a riff or four-bar cycle; solos need not be complex, but must keep time. Gospel call-and-response and vibrato give it a church scent.
Key figures
Jimmy Smith defined the organ trio, Horace Silver wrote gospel and blues into hard bop, and Cannonball Adderley took soul jazz to pop audiences. Lee Morgan, Stanley Turrentine, Grant Green and Jack McDuff cover trumpet, tenor, guitar and organ; Shirley Scott and Ramsey Lewis widened the field.
Lineage
Hard bop, blues, gospel and R&B feed in; jazz-funk, acid jazz, smooth jazz and hip-hop sampling come out. It is jazz's most dance-floor and radio-facing branch.
Common misunderstandings
Soul jazz is not smooth jazz: the former keeps a rough tone and live feel, while the latter is a later production aesthetic. Nor is it simplified hard bop, since groove looseness and gospel phrasing are themselves difficult. Reducing it to organ music misses saxophone, guitar or piano-led recordings.
