Who she was
Lili Boulanger (1893–1918) was born in Paris to a composer and singing teacher and a mother of Russian descent; her elder sister Nadia became the most famous composition teacher of the twentieth century. Frail from childhood, she still entered the Paris Conservatoire, studying composition with Fauré and organ with Vierne. In 1913 she won the Prix de Rome with the cantata Faust et Hélène, the first woman to do so. She died in 1918 at twenty-four.
Her place
She stands where French impressionism meets religious music: her harmony inherits Debussy and Fauré, while her manner is more concentrated and more devotional. Her output is small, mostly choral, orchestral and song, with only a handful of solo piano pieces such as the Three Morceaux. Because there is so little of it, each piece sounds finished and reworked rather than student work. The division of labour with Nadia, one writing and one teaching, is often mentioned too. Her piano writing often splits the chord into two layers, one held still and one moving above, a device even clearer in the songs.
What to hear
Listen first for harmonic propulsion. Her dissonance is never decoration; it pushes the phrase toward a brighter chord, as the slow bass motion of Dans l'immense tristesse shows. Then equality of voice and piano: in Clairières dans le ciel the piano is no accompanist and often keeps speaking when the voice stops. Then modal colour — she liked old modes and parallel chords, which make the music sound ancient and modern at once. Finally density in short spans, since her pieces rarely exceed ten minutes and every bar carries information.
Key works
- Piano: Three Morceaux
- Songs: Clairières dans le ciel (thirteen songs), Dans l'immense tristesse
- Chorus and orchestra: Psalm 24, Psalm 130, Vieille prière bouddhique, Pie Jesu
Influence
Her early death removed one possible direction for French music, yet her work shaped Nadia's teaching, and Nadia's students in turn shaped twentieth-century music in France and America. Hearing her songs now, what strikes first is accuracy — poem, harmony and breath aligned exactly, and that accuracy is itself a kind of modernity. The opera she planned survives only as sketches, and her orchestral works were largely edited by others.
