Leo Ornstein

The most radical piano voice in 1910s New York, who lived into the next century

Who he was

Leo Ornstein (1893–2002) was born in Kremenchug, Ukraine, emigrated with his family to New York in 1906, and studied piano at the Institute of Musical Art. In the 1910s he became famous as a pianist playing his own music, which then sounded close to noise, and his recitals provoked argument. In the 1920s he withdrew from the stage into teaching and composing, spent his last years in the countryside, and died in 2002, reportedly at a hundred and eight.

His place

He was a step ahead of the American modernism usually described in histories. While "futurism" was still a European slogan he was already hammering chords and piling dissonance into sustained sound at the piano. Yet he was no straight-line avant-gardist: his late works return to tonality and lyricism, at times close to nineteenth-century Romantic language. That reversal makes him both a pioneer and an old-fashioned pianist left behind by fashion. The SO numbers were assigned by researchers, and many pieces were never published in his lifetime.

What to hear

Listen first for the thickness of the chords. Suicide in an Airplane has almost no melody, driving forward on dense chords and falling figures; hear how it keeps direction without a subject. Then mechanical rhythm, where a repeated figure works like a motor but alters slightly at each turn. Then the change of style: the Seventh Sonata, written in the 1980s, turns suddenly warm, and you hear the same man putting the avant-garde away. Finally collage in miniatures, since the Nine Miniatures read like photographs from nine different decades.

Influence

Ornstein was treated in his lifetime as a scandal from the past and rediscovered only after his death. His importance lies in the time lag — what he did in 1913 became systematic in Europe only in the 1920s — and his own turn backward reminds us that the avant-garde is not a road that can only go forward. Hearing the early works now, what startles is not the dissonance but the persistence of the rhythm.
