Jazz-Funk
One chord holds the whole stretch while electric bass and drums lock into a groove and solos heat it up
Related
Jazz-funk puts funk rhythm in front and keeps jazz harmony and improvisation on top. It does not chase constant modulation; one figure and one chord can hold for minutes while solos heat up inside a steady groove.
Origins and era
Miles Davis's Bitches Brew in 1969 brought electric piano, electric bass and rock drums into jazz, and On the Corner in 1972 went further, almost to pure rhythm. Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters in 1973 reached a wide market with the synthesizer figure of Chameleon, and Weather Report, formed in 1971, took electric jazz international. In the later 1970s Roy Ayers, George Duke and Donald Byrd's Blackbyrds carried the groove onto disco and soul radio.
What you hear
Drums play straight four with sixteenth-note hi-hat and snare on two and four, the kick leaving gaps through syncopation. Electric bass repeats a short figure, often circling root and fifth. Electric piano, clavinet and wah guitar handle harmony in few, sustained chords, usually with ninths and thirteenths. Solos can be long, but they build through tone, dynamics and layered phrases rather than ii–V motion. Tempos mostly sit between 80 and 120 BPM, with faster funk as well.
Key figures
Herbie Hancock made Head Hunters the model for electric funk, Miles Davis pushed jazz toward rhythm in live shows and records through the early 1970s, and Weather Report's Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter kept harmony inside electric sound. Roy Ayers's vibraphone, George Duke's synthesizers and the Blackbyrds' guitars defined the texture.
Lineage
Funk, soul jazz and fusion meet here, with late-1960s electric experiments behind it and acid jazz, hip-hop sampling, neo-soul and nu-jazz ahead. It ran alongside disco but kept longer solos and richer harmony.
Common misunderstandings
Jazz-funk is not funk with a saxophone added, since improvisation and harmony still matter, only inside a repeating groove. Nor is it fusion, which favours technical display and elaborate arrangement, while jazz-funk lets one groove run. Treating it as a disco branch misses its influence on later hip-hop sampling.
