Hugo Wolf
The song composer who put the poem first and let the piano act behind the line

Who he was
Hugo Wolf (1860–1903) was born in Windischgrätz in Styria, today in Slovenia. He entered the Vienna Conservatory at fifteen, was dismissed two years later, and lived by teaching, copying music and criticism. From 1884 he reviewed for the Wiener Salonblatt, championing Wagner and attacking Brahms. In 1888 he wrote songs in bulk within months; his opera Der Corregidor was finished in 1895. He broke down in 1897 and died in a Vienna asylum in 1903.
His place
He arrived after German song had already matured, with Schubert, Schumann and Brahms having smoothed the road. His method was to put the poem first: the melody follows the tone of speech instead of hunting for a handsome tune. Harmonically he took over Wagner's chromatic language and let the piano modulate, comment and undercut between the phrases. The result sounds like miniature theatre, and kept him at a distance from the song tradition around him. He worked in silence for years, then volcanically for months.
What to hear
Listen first for the postlude. In Verborgenheit the piano keeps going after the last line, the harmony turns, and the poem's meaning is rewritten; those few seconds weigh more than the singing. Then for the picture first. Auf einer Wanderung opens with the piano already running and a distant horn, so the scene exists before the voice enters. Next, silence. In Verschwiegene Liebe the bass sinks and phrases stop short; the rests carry meaning. Finally, the role of the accompaniment. Das Ständchen has the piano plucking like a lute, setting an outdoor night at once; the voice is merely the invited guest.
Key works

- Spanisches Liederbuch, Italienisches Liederbuch
- Opera Der Corregidor, orchestral tone poem Penthesilea
Influence
His songs became required repertoire for singers and reopened the question of whether poem or music rules. He showed that a piano can act as commentator inside a song rather than as harmonic wallpaper, and Strauss and Pfitzner worked along that line. His output is not large and almost none of it is occasional. Listen with the text in hand; almost every harmonic move answers a word.
