Ferruccio Busoni
Italian pianist-thinker who pushed Bachian counterpoint into modern music

Who he was
Ferruccio Busoni (1866–1924) was born in Empoli, Italy, and worked as pianist, composer, teacher and writer. A child prodigy, he studied in Vienna and Graz, then moved through Helsinki, Moscow and Boston before settling in Berlin in 1894, where he died in 1924. He read widely, spoke several languages, and published essays about the future of music.
His place
He stands between the Romantic piano tradition and modernism. With one hand he continued Liszt's path, turning Bach's organ works into large piano architecture; with the other he argued in the 1907 Sketch of a New Aesthetic of Music for new scales and even for electronic sound, and around 1920 proposed "young classicism", the idea of emptying old forms and refilling them. Kurt Weill and Philipp Jarnach studied with him; Schoenberg and Varèse corresponded with him. His recital programmes make the same point, placing Bach, Liszt and his own music in a single evening.
What to hear
Listen first for the transcriber's eye. His Bach is not copying: every contrapuntal layer is re-registered and re-weighted for the piano, and the left hand takes over the pedal bass. Then the ambition of structure. The Fantasia contrappuntistica breaks the Musical Offering subject apart and rebuilds it at a length and density closer to a cathedral; follow what happens to the subject each time it returns. Finally the orchestral piano, whose chords are often voiced like brass and strings rather than like comfortable hands.
Key works
- Piano: Fantasia contrappuntistica BV 256, 24 Preludes Op.37, An die Jugend BV 254, Six Études Op.16
- Orchestra: Piano Concerto Op.39, Comedy Overture
- Opera: Doktor Faust, left unfinished and completed by others
Influence
What Busoni left behind is not a style but a habit of holding playing, composing and thinking together. His ideas about scales and electric sound came decades early, his Bach transcriptions remain a test for pianists, and the phrase "new classicism" was taken up by the Stravinsky generation. He also edited Bach and Liszt for publication, and those editions shaped how several generations read the page. His editions and transcriptions also kept the organ repertoire alive in the concert hall.
