Arcangelo Corelli

A Roman violinist who made the concerto grosso a model for all Europe

Who he was

Arcangelo Corelli (1653–1713) was born in Fusignano and trained in Bologna before settling in Rome. He wrote no operas and chased no court post; he worked as a violinist, ensemble leader and composer in the circle of Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni. He published only six sets of music in his life, and every one of them became a textbook for later composers.

His place

Corelli belongs to the middle Baroque. Roman patrons of the day wanted clear order: a few voices, a firm bass, tunes one could recognise on return. He fixed the trio sonata and the concerto grosso into stable shapes — the slow-fast-slow-fast church sonata, the order of dance movements — so that they could be taught, learned and copied. Op. 6 appeared the year after his death and travelled quickly across Europe.

What to hear

Listen first for two groups: the concerto grosso divides the band into a small solo group and the full tutti, and volume shifts by numbers rather than by crescendo. Then hear the walking bass: cello and contrabass repeat one figure while the piece climbs step by step. Next, chain sequences: a short phrase passes to the next voice, one step higher or lower, again and again. Finally, suspended dissonance: those slow-movement notes that refuse to land are the most moving gesture in Baroque music.

Influence

Corelli's pupils and admirers carried this manner across Europe; Vivaldi, Handel and Bach all learned from Op. 6 how solo and orchestra might talk. He did not invent the concerto grosso, but he turned it into the standard of an age.
