Cool Jazz
Softer dynamics, lighter tone and arranged space brought jazz closer to chamber music.
Related
Cool jazz stepped back from the pressure of bebop in the late 1940s. It lowered the volume, smoothed the tone and used arrangement and space to let solos breathe like chamber music.
Origins and era
Between 1949 and 1950 Miles Davis's nonet recorded in New York the sessions later issued as Birth of the Cool, with arrangements by Gil Evans and Gerry Mulligan. In the same years Los Angeles players shaped a lighter small-group jazz. Cool jazz was drawn to big-band colour and classical scoring, and kept its distance from bebop speed.
What you hear
Tempos are usually medium or slow, drums use a light ride and brushes, and the bass walks without hurry. Trumpets are often muted, saxophones use little vibrato, and volume stays low. Arrangements bring French horn, tuba or vibraphone forward and set voices in chamber-like counterpoint. Solos leave gaps instead of filling every bar.
Key figures
Miles Davis's nonet fixed the sound, and Gil Evans wrote its cool blocks of colour. Gerry Mulligan's baritone and Chet Baker's soft trumpet define the lighter West Coast tone. The Dave Brubeck Quartet's Take Five carried cool jazz into the charts with a 5/4 pulse.
Lineage
Bebop and big-band arranging feed in; modal jazz, bossa nova and West Coast jazz come out. It stands against the hotter hard bop of the same years.
Common misunderstandings
Cool jazz is not the same as West Coast jazz, since New York's nonet and the Tristano school belong to it too. It is not emotionless, only restrained in tone and space. Equating it with later smooth jazz misses its care for arrangement and counterpoint.
