César Cui
The Five's engineer, who opened the way with salon miniatures and criticism

Who he was
César Cui (1835–1918) was born in Vilnius to a French father and a Lithuanian mother. He trained at the engineering school in St Petersburg and became a professor of military fortification, writing textbooks on the defence of fortresses. In music he was largely guided by Balakirev; he joined the Five in the 1860s and became the group's most active critic and spokesman. He wrote operas, songs, choral works and a great many piano miniatures, and died in Petrograd in 1918.
His place
Cui's position is unusual: he was an officer and engineer first, and composed and wrote criticism in his spare time. That shapes the music, which is polished, short and close to salon taste, without Mussorgsky's rough experimentation. In the press he defended the Five and attacked the conservatory camp and Italian opera, and the polemics mattered almost as much as the works. His operas William Ratcliff and The Saracen use exotic and oriental subjects but are rarely staged today.
What to hear
Listen first for the manners of the melody. Cui's phrases care about stress and ending the way French prose does; in the piano pieces there is little shouting, and a phrase will often turn away half-finished. Then hear the role of the accompaniment. His left hand usually offers only a light harmonic wash while the melody decides when to linger. Finally hear the restraint of variation. Theme and Variations Op. 61 does not win by adding notes but by changing colour and touch, so the same theme returns with a different face.
Key works
- Operas: William Ratcliff, The Saracen, The Mandarin's Son
- Piano: Miniatures Op. 20, Theme and Variations Op. 61, preludes
- Vocal: songs and choral music, plus a large body of criticism
Influence
Cui's music survives mainly as a sample of Russian salon style rather than as concert repertoire. His real legacy was putting the Five's case into words, giving the national school a voice in the Russian press. His piano miniatures show that nationality can live in the syntax of a small genre without needing an epic.
