Yunnan Folk Songs

Yunnan's folk songs join Han mountain tunes with the songs of many peoples, sharing long phrases, ornament and a taste for minor colour.

Time and place

Yunnan's folk songs belong to basins and mountains across the province. Han areas such as Midu and Kunming favour mountain songs and xiaodiao, while Yi, Bai and Dai communities keep their own types. Work, weddings and festivals call for singing, and antiphonal singing across valleys is common.

Musical features

Han mountain songs are mostly pentatonic, often in yu or zhi mode, with a high opening, long phrases and a falling close. Ornament and portamento are frequent, refrain syllables stretch the line, and rhythm is free. Xiaodiao are more regular, usually in four phrases. Yunnan flower-lantern theatre takes such tunes onto the stage, while minority repertoires carry their own languages and ritual duties.

Repertoire

Known pieces include Small River Flowing, Midu Mountain Song, Herding Horses, Shua Shan Diao and The Big River Rises. Small River Flowing was arranged from a Midu tune and has moved from the original.

What to listen for

Start with the first call of Herding Horses, where the singer leaps from low to high and stretches the line with refrain syllables. Follow the fall at the end of Shua Shan Diao, a natural cadence of mountain speech. Then hear how The Big River Rises repeats one tune with new words.

Common misunderstandings

Yunnan folk song is often equated with minority music. Han communities are numerous, and their mountain songs, xiaodiao and flower-lantern tunes form a system of their own. Nor is the arranged Small River Flowing a field recording; its melody and delivery were reshaped.
