The Formation of Yu Opera

Yu Opera grew from Henan bangzi and local speech, its four ban types balancing bold and mournful registers.

Time and place

Yu Opera, formerly Henan bangzi, formed in Henan in the late Ming and early Qing, related to the Shanxi-Shaanxi bangzi family. It was played at temple fairs, entered Kaifeng and Zhengzhou theatres in the early twentieth century, and was named Yu Opera in the mid-twentieth century.

Vocal style and musical features

It belongs to the bangzi family and uses banqiang form, built on four ban types, namely manban, erban, liushui and feiban. Erban is most common, pairing matched lines for narrative or lyric expression; manban unfolds slowly, liushui rushes, feiban approaches free metre. The banhu leads, a jujube clapper marks time, and sheng, flute and erhu fill the band. Singing follows Henan speech, with the eastern style high and florid, the western style low and chest-voiced, while the Xiangfu and Shahe styles favour other colours.

Representative plays

Hua Mulan, Mu Guiying Takes Command, Chaoyang Village, Qin Xianglian, The County Magistrate with the Sesame Hat and The Orphan of the Cheng Family, mixing court dramas with modern plays.

What to listen for

Begin with Henan's Dry-Boat Tune, Thirteen Months of Lantern Embroidery and A Roll of Gongs and Drums to hear the tones and phrase lengths of local speech, then how bangzi ban forms absorb them. In Yu Opera, count the clapper and follow the paired lines of erban.

Common misunderstandings

A common mistake is to hear Yu Opera as only high and loud, or to think it was invented after 1949. The western style is low and dark against the eastern; the genre grew from Henan bangzi over centuries and only took the name Yu Opera in the modern period.
