Wuxi Opera
Xiju grew from Wuxi tanhuang, its huangdiao and dalu tunes telling household tales around Lake Tai

Time and place
Xiju belongs to Wuxi, Changzhou and their hinterland in Jiangsu, and to Shanghai. Under the Daoguang and Xianfeng reigns local tanhuang moved from sitting song to costumed performance as Wuxi tanhuang, later merging with the Changzhou strand as Chang-Xi dramatic song, and taking the name xiju in the 1950s.
What happened
Its base was the tanhuang duet play, two or three performers acting out a household story such as Double Push Mill, Meeting in the Nunnery or Pulling Orchids. In town it entered playhouses, grew serial plays, and absorbed Suzhou storytelling and some Beijing opera stagecraft. It stayed a singing theatre with plain acting, its plays about marriage, family and neighbours, with almost no martial pieces.
Musical features
The singing is banqiang. Huangdiao is the basic tune, in old, new and flowing forms, built on paired phrases at flexible speed; dalu, from Suzhou storytelling, is bright and smooth; lingling, zijin and mihun tunes also appear. The lead is the zhu hu, an erhu, with pipa, sanxian, flute and clappers. Speech is Wuxi-Changzhou dialect, soft in articulation, phrases ending in small turns, and early performances used a helping chorus.
What to listen for
Start with Jiangsu Wuxi jing, a song about the town rather than an aria, but sharing the Wu phrase shapes and falling endings. Then Zizhu diao and Xiu hebao for paired phrases, filler syllables and ornament. Returning to xiju, notice how a slow huangdiao opening and a bright dalu can alternate within one play.
Common misunderstandings
People often take xiju for Wuxi folk-song singing, or for the same genre as huju. Xiju is a tanhuang-derived opera with role types, ban forms and full-length plays; huju took shape in Shanghai with its own lead instrument and tunes. Xiju is also not Suzhou pingtan.
