Who he was
Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901) was an Italian opera composer born near Busseto. After the deaths of his wife and children he scored a triumph with Nabucco and its chorus of Hebrew slaves, then wrote operas for nearly sixty years, ending with Otello and Falstaff. His name is almost a synonym for nineteenth-century Italian opera.
His place
He is the summation of the Italian tradition in which the voice comes first, and a musical symbol of Italian unification. "Va, pensiero" from Nabucco became a national song. He respected the conventional set piece, yet made orchestra and harmony servants of drama. He was both a craftsman of the theatre and a moral voice in public life.
What to hear
Listen to the vocal line: arias often begin close to speech and then open into broad melody. Then hear the ensembles, where characters sing their separate thoughts at once and conflict accumulates in the harmony. Finally weigh the baritone, who carries so much of Verdi's authority, grief and remorse. The orchestra never steals the scene, but every entrance changes the temperature.
Key works
Nabucco; Rigoletto; La traviata; Il trovatore; Aida; Otello; Requiem.
Influence
He made opera both popular entertainment and political or moral statement. Verismo, Puccini and generations of Italian film composers learned from him how melody can carry drama. He proved that the simplest tune, placed exactly right, can make a whole theatre fall silent.
