Time and place
25 April 1926, Teatro alla Scala, Milan. Puccini died in 1924, leaving the final duet incomplete. Alfano completed it from the sketches. Toscanini stopped where Puccini did; the complete version came the next evening.
What happened
The story takes place in an imagined Chinese court, where Turandot sets three riddles and failed suitors die. Puccini uses pentatonic scales, gongs and marches for colour, then brings the voice back to intimacy in Liù's arias. The finale must move from Liù's death to Turandot's change of heart, the passage Puccini did not finish.
What changed
Italian grand opera reached its end in Turandot and pushed exotic spectacle to an extreme. It proved opera could still produce a global hit; Nessun dorma later entered film and stadiums. Its unfinished state made completion part of the work, and Alfano's version is still argued over.
Listen for the turn
Begin with Liù's aria, where the melody is simple and the voice seems to speak indoors. Then hear Turandot's theme, where gongs and pentatonic scales enlarge the stage. Finally hear the finale turn from death to triumph, the problem every completion faced.
