Time and place
6 March 1853, Teatro La Fenice, Venice. Francesco Maria Piave adapted the libretto from Dumas fils's novel La Dame aux camélias. The story is set in contemporary Paris, and Violetta is a courtesan, not a queen.
What happened
The production put modern dress on the stage, which the audience found improper. Fanny Salvini-Donatelli, the first Violetta, was stout, not consumptive, and the boxes laughed. The tenor and baritone were poor, and the second act did not take hold. Verdi revised the score, and a Venice revival in 1854 fared much better.
What changed
Opera began to face contemporary life directly. Violetta's arias are no longer display pieces but stages in her collapse. Verdi keeps the orchestra light and brings the voice close to speech. This intimate realism prepared the way for verismo.
Listen for the turn
Begin with the first-act melody and notice how the orchestra wraps Violetta's monologue in waltz rhythm. Then hear her coloratura: the quick figures are her attempt to seize freedom. Finally hear the last act, where the voice thins and the orchestra recedes.
