Tibetan Folk Song

Songs of the Tibetan plateau, high in register and rich in vocables, with zhe and nangma adding dance steps.

Where it is sung

Tibetan folk song is heard across the Tibetan plateau and in Tibetan areas of Sichuan, Yunnan, Gansu and Qinghai. Farming valleys, pastoral land and towns each have their own types, and the styles of U-Tsang, Kham and Amdo differ.

Musical features

Most songs use a pentatonic frame, sit high in the voice and add vocables and long tails at phrase ends. Pastoral songs are open and free; farming songs keep a firmer beat. Zhe is sung with tap-dance steps, while nangma belongs to town entertainment.

Repertory

Beijing's Golden Mountain and the Washing Song are often taken as Tibetan-style favourites, but both are modern arrangements or compositions. In the traditional repertory, drinking songs, herding songs, love songs and work songs each have their own occasions.

What to listen for

Begin with the high opening and the vocables at phrase ends, then hear the step accents of zhe. The library holds very few Tibetan tracks; the playable samples show melodic outlines only and cannot replace fieldwork.

Common misunderstandings

A common mistake is to take Tibetan-style concert songs for traditional folk song. Works such as Beijing's Golden Mountain have known modern arrangers, while traditional songs pass by mouth and change with occasion.
