Who he was
Georg Philipp Telemann (1681–1767) was born in Magdeburg and had almost no formal training in composition, teaching himself from scores. He worked as a church musician in his home town and in Leipzig, then in Eisenach and Frankfurt, and from 1721 ran church music and the opera house in Hamburg until his death. He was also godfather to C. P. E. Bach.
His place
Telemann was the busiest composer of the German late Baroque and the most famous one of his day. He did not pursue Bach's dense counterpoint; instead he blended French dance, Italian concerto and Polish folk rhythm into a style both accessible and refined. He was an early composer to publish his own music by subscription, and Der getreue Music-Meister let amateurs buy new pieces.
What to hear
Listen first for switching styles: within one suite, French dances, Italian allegros and Polish rhythms can stand side by side, and the composer makes them coexist. Then hear the character of the winds: he wrote quantities of sonatas for recorder, flute and bassoon, with lines that breathe like a voice. Finally the bass: the continuo is not mere accompaniment but often steers the harmony.
Key works
- Tafelmusik, Paris Quartets
- Recorder and flute sonatas, concerto for three trumpets
- Cantata Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen, Der getreue Music-Meister
Influence
Telemann was more famous than Bach in his lifetime, and his mixed style anticipates the elegance of the later Classical period. His wind music remains core teaching repertoire for recorder and flute players, and his subscription volumes were an early experiment in the music market. He proved that prolific need not mean careless, and that style can be a kind of diplomacy.
