Sigismond Thalberg
A virtuoso rivalling Liszt, who made the thumb sing a middle voice

Who he was
Sigismond Thalberg (1812–1871) was born in Geneva and studied in Vienna as a young man. He made his debut in 1829 and then toured London, Paris and much of Europe. In the 1830s he was named alongside Liszt as the most talked-about pianist of the day, and in 1837 the two appeared in Paris in an event the press turned into a duel. He spent his last years near Naples and died there in 1871.
His place
Thalberg was the emblem of the opera-fantasy era. The best-selling piano music of the time was not the sonata but the fantasy that took a popular opera tune apart and dressed it in ornament and variation. His speciality was to place the melody in the middle register, sung in turn by the two thumbs, while the other fingers spread arpeggios above and below, so that the piano seemed to have three hands. That device kept song inside virtuosity and marked his distance from Liszt.
What to hear
Listen first for the melody in the middle. The Grande Fantaisie on Semiramide Op.51 draws on Rossini's opera; when the theme first arrives it sits between a moving treble and a moving bass, and the line to follow is the one being surrounded. Then hear how weight is shared: the short Graziosa lasts a few minutes, and the melody must carry without the thumb being lifted. Then take the large structure. The Grande Sonate Op.56 shows he was not only a fantasy composer, its virtuoso writing placed in the recapitulation and coda rather than piled at the opening.

Influence
Thalberg's fame matched Liszt's in his lifetime and faded quickly after his death, partly because his music depends on operas now rarely staged. His handling of keyboard layers survived, however: melody hidden in the middle with accompaniment flowing on both sides, an idea later taken up in different ways by Liszt, Godowsky and Rachmaninoff. His fantasies are also a record of what a nineteenth-century audience wanted from a recital.
