Shoegaze
Guitars stacked into a wall of reverb with the voice pushed back, in late-1980s Britain.
Related
Shoegaze spread guitars into a wall of reverb and pushed the voice back, forming in Britain's Thames Valley and London in the late 1980s.
Origins and era
In 1988 My Bloody Valentine's Isn't Anything combined tremolo arm, distortion and reverb into a new vocabulary, and Loveless in 1991 took it to an extreme. Ride in Oxford, Slowdive in Reading and Chapterhouse appeared around the same time. In 1990 and 1991 the British music press used shoegaze for musicians staring at their effects pedals, and the word was initially dismissive.
What you hear
Tempos run from 90 to 130 BPM, drums often feel half-time, and snare and cymbals sit inside reverb. Guitars are layered in overdubs, pitch slides with the tremolo arm, and chords sustain without resolving into a wall of sound. Vocals are mixed low, words are hard to catch, and male and female voices may overlap. Tracks last four to six minutes, and sections differ by volume and density rather than a clear chorus. Guitarists often alternate two chords and shape the rise and fall with tremolo arm and volume pedal, the snare is mixed low while cymbals stay bright, and reverb and delay sit at the end of the signal chain, making the whole track feel like one large hall.
Key figures
Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine defined the tone through tremolo arm and studio technique, while Bilinda Butcher's voice supplied a blurred melody. Ride's early singles were closer to guitar pop, Slowdive was quieter and slower, and Chapterhouse brought dance rhythm in. The differences among these bands are larger than the label can hold.
Lineage
Noise pop, post-punk and 1980s independent guitar music feed in; 1990s post-rock and later instrumental rock come out. It placed tone and space ahead of melody and influenced ambient metal and dream pop. In the mid-1990s the British press turned to Britpop, the scene receded quickly, and bands broke up or changed direction. Listeners in the United States and Europe kept it alive through reissues and reunions, and a new generation picked up the tremolo arm and reverb in the 2010s.
Common misunderstandings
The common claim is that shoegaze is only whispered vocals over noise, when vocal placement and guitar layers vary widely. Another is that the word was always a compliment; it began as press sarcasm. Treating it as a purely British phenomenon also ignores similar bands in the United States and Europe. Treating it as a tone recipe likewise misses the songwriting.
