Pingtan, Suzhou Storytelling

Pingtan combines Suzhou pinghua and tanci, telling stories in Wu dialect to sanxian and pipa.

Time and place

Pingtan grew up in Suzhou in the Ming and Qing and flourished in teahouse halls across Jiangnan. Pinghua is told by one speaker; tanci is sung by one performer or a pair, usually a man with sanxian and a woman with pipa. Wang Zhoushi sang at the Qianlong court; famous masters followed through the late Qing and republican years.

Vocal style and musical features

The language is Suzhou dialect, with narration, official speech close to Zhongzhou pronunciation, and private speech in the local tongue. Singing is built on the shudiao, coloured by lyric Yudiao, plain Madiao, mellow Jiangdiao and mournful Lidiao. Lines usually have seven characters with added filler syllables, and speech runs into song. Performance values shuo, xue, tan, chang and yan, namely telling, comedy, plucking, singing and acting. Sanxian and pipa accompany, play introductions and answer the voice; pinghua uses only a block and fan.

Representative plays

Tanci repertory includes The White Snake, The Jade Dragonfly, The Pearl Tower, The Golden Phoenix, Three Smiles and The Western Chamber; pinghua includes Three Kingdoms, Water Margin, The Heroes and The Yue Fei Story, long cycles lasting months.

What to listen for

Begin with Gusu Fengguang, a Suzhou suite sharing the Wu dialect and the linking of tunes; then Wuxi Jing and Molihua for Jiangnan phrase endings and filler syllables. In pingtan, follow the sanxian's grain, the pipa's tremolo, and the breath between speech and song.

Common misunderstandings

Pingtan is often mistaken for an opera genre, or reduced to tanci. It joins pinghua and tanci, and pinghua has no singing; nor is it in standard Mandarin, since Suzhou speech is its ground.
