The Piano Trio Takes Shape
Vienna in the 1780s, when piano, violin and cello moved from hierarchy to dialogue
Related
The piano trio was not one composer's invention. It grew out of the keyboard sonata with accompaniment into a genre of three equal voices, and Vienna in the 1780s is where that shape settled.
Time and place
Vienna, in the 1780s. Mozart wrote his last piano trios between 1786 and 1788, and piano, violin and cello began to share the thematic work. Haydn's late trios, written for London, gave the strings more independence. For half a century before, such works were titled for harpsichord or piano with violin and cello accompanying.
What happened
The early trio was a keyboard sonata with two accompanying lines: the cello doubled the bass, the violin held long notes or filled harmony, and the keyboard carried the music. Mozart changed the division of labour, passing themes among three parts, giving the cello melodic phrases and freeing the violin from decoration. With Beethoven the trio became a concerto for three soloists; with Schubert its length and lyricism approached the symphony. Each change followed instrument making, since a louder, wider-ranged piano could hold its own against two strings.
What changed
A scoring appeared between the home and the concert hall: three players could perform, cheaply, and still carry serious structure. Publishers therefore issued trios and amateurs had music to buy. The piano trio also became a common first chamber work in print, and Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms and Dvorak all entered chamber music this way.
Listen for the turn
Begin with the slow movement of Mozart's Trio No. 3 in B flat, the piano supplying harmony while the violin sings. Then the Andante of the Trio No. 4 in E, the theme handed along all three instruments. Finally the opening of Beethoven's Trio in E flat, where all three state the theme and none accompanies. These are chamber recordings; follow who holds the theme.
