Patronage
From court and church paying musicians to the market paying composers

The question
How did musicians live? Before the Classical era the answer was usually court or church: musicians were servants and composing was part of the job. By the nineteenth century the answer became the market: publishing, concerts, teaching and royalties. The shift in patronage changed the music itself.
The outline
- Medieval–Renaissance: church and court were the main employers; a musician's status depended on a post.
- Baroque: court ensembles and church posts remained central; Bach and Handel both worked inside this system.
- Classical: Haydn served the Esterházy family for nearly three decades; Mozart left court service and tried publishing and performance; Beethoven lived from aristocratic support, publishing and concerts, becoming a prototype of the independent artist.
- Nineteenth century: public concerts, music publishing and conservatories grew together; composers could live by works and reputation, but depended more on public taste.
- Twentieth century: recording, radio, film and copyright added income; patronage returned through foundations, universities and state programmes.
The turning point
From "post" to "work": once musicians were no longer attached to a court, the work had to stand on its own — publication, performance and criticism became the new judges. This brought freedom and instability at once.
What to hear
The same genre is written differently under different systems: court dances must be short and danceable; concert works can be long and complex; published piano music must suit the technique of domestic players. When you hear the music, hear the life behind it.
