Birth of Opera
Florence, 1600: for the first time, sung drama carries an entire story.

Time and place
Florence, 1600, in the Pitti Palace. At the Medici wedding, Peri and Caccini presented sung dramas on Euridice; the earlier Dafne is lost. Venice opened the first public ticket-selling opera house in 1637.
What happened
Florentine circles wanted to recover the half-sung effect of Greek tragedy. They dropped complex polyphony, letting a single voice move over a bass, harmony supporting emotion and the text carrying the plot. Peri's Euridice sang the whole play; Monteverdi's Orfeo took the manner into the theatre, and later into public opera in Venice.
What changed
Music carried a drama whole for the first time, no longer an ornament of liturgy or court. Recitative, aria, chorus and orchestra found places; singers became stars, and theatres ran on ticket sales. Opera packed poetry, acting, scenery, dance and music into one evening.
Listen to the turn
Arianna's lament is the only surviving fragment of Monteverdi's lost opera, the voice sliding over a held bass between speech and song. By Poppea the same manner could sustain an evening in a public theatre. The Lamento della ninfa carries that grief into the madrigal, showing the new style spilling out of the opera house.
