National Anthem
An anthem compresses a nation's self-image into under a minute, and singers believe it more than listeners.

Question
Why do anthems sound like military music? They must be clear outdoors and on air, and singable across ranges. The harder question is who decides which melody represents a nation. An anthem compresses who we are into a minute and keeps dissent outside the chorus.
Historical background
Early communities relied on hymns, royal marches, and local songs. The French Revolution and nineteenth-century states standardized the anthem, choosing a folk song, hymn, or march. After 1945, the United Nations and the Olympics made anthems part of recognition, and television turned the medal podium into a national image.
Key cases
God Save the King moved from theatre song to imperial ritual. The Star-Spangled Banner uses an English drinking-song tune, with words about Fort McHenry in 1814. Tagore wrote words and music for India's Jana Gana Mana, adopted in 1950. Ukraine's anthem, written in 1863, was suppressed under Russian and Soviet rule before becoming official in 1991. Each begins with we, yet defines a different we.
What to listen for
Listen to the opening fanfare, the stress of the words, and whether the ending rises or closes. An anthem's dignity often comes from rhythm rather than melody, and the crowd's breathing reveals whom it was written for.
