Music and Nature
Composers set birdsong, storms and valleys into scores, turning nature into playable landscape.

Question
Nature has no melody, and a bird does not sing in equal temperament. What gives a composer the right to call a piece natural? What is written is a way of hearing nature, not nature itself.
Historical background
Renaissance madrigals staged shepherds, and Baroque music used stock figures for storms and birds. Romanticism made landscape a mirror of the self, producing pastoral symphonies and forest pieces. In the twentieth century, recording brought actual natural sound into music, and ambient styles turned it into background.
Key cases
Vivaldi's Winter uses tremolo strings and rapid figures for cold wind. The piano reduction of Beethoven's Pastoral keeps the brook and bird calls, and Schumann's Entering the Forest builds depth from low steps and echoes. The three move from weather to landscape to inner space.
What to listen for
Hear whether bird calls are short and repeated in the high register, whether the bass walks like footsteps or shadows, and whether silence follows the storm.
