Question
Gender in opera is sung and also acted. Who is allowed to sing the lead, who only plays the servant, and who must dress as a man?
Historical background
Opera in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries relied heavily on castrati, men who sang female or heroic roles. Female singers became stars in the nineteenth century, but plots often cast them as fallen women who die for love. Breeches roles and gender-fluid characters reached mainstream stages in the twentieth century, while women composers and conductors still fight for position.
Key cases
Carmen (1875) joins a woman worker's freedom to violence. La traviata (1853) lets a courtesan die of illness, and Der Rosenkavalier (1911) gives the young Octavian to a mezzo-soprano in trousers. The three display the gaze, sacrifice, and cross-dressing.
What to listen for
Hear whether coloratura is displayed as ornament, whether the bass presses down on the character, and how voice and costume fail to match in a breeches role.

Gender performance depends on the dramatic frame of Opera; Romantic shaped the heroine's sacrifice, and piano reductions on the Piano carried the stage into the parlor.
