Music and Fashion
The dance floor is a fashion runway, and dance rhythms set the pace for hems, heels and status.

Question
Clothes make no sound, but a ball needs music. How wide a skirt can be and how high a heel can go are often decided by the speed of the dance. How do fashion and music shape each other?
Historical background
Court balls displayed rank through processions and dress. The nineteenth-century waltz brought partners into a close turn, making crinolines and gloves necessary equipment. Jazz and swing brought short skirts, stockings, and dance shoes into daily life in the twentieth century, while rock and punk made tears and studs part of the sound.
Key cases
After the Ball became a best-selling waltz for ballroom and parlor in 1891. Joplin's The Ragtime Dance put a new step on stage in 1902, and Albeniz's Champagne Waltz wrote the sheen of evening dress in a salon waltz. The three concern farewell, a new step, and luxury.
What to listen for
Hear whether the first beat of the three turns the body, whether syncopation breaks the step into pieces, and whether a phrase leaves time for a skirt to turn.

Fashion and dance share the three beats of the Waltz; the balls of Romantic turned dress into status, and the Piano carried the dance into the home.
