Music and Dance
Steps give music a body, and music gives steps a timeline.

Question
Dance needs music, and music often grows out of steps. Why does dance music have a beat that makes people move? Is rhythm directing the body, or is the body counting for the music? Steps and sound define each other's tempo and breath.
Historical background
Court, folk, and ritual dances had their own heavy beats. The waltz entered city ballrooms in the nineteenth century, and dance music moved from accompaniment to concert genre. In the twentieth century, ballet, tango, jazz dance, and disco tied dancing to the record industry. Leaving the ballroom, it keeps the beat but changes the body.
Key cases
Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake failed in 1877; the 1895 revival became a model of classical ballet, its melodies giving dancers room to breathe. Boléro was commissioned by Ida Rubinstein in 1928, and Ravel repeats one rhythm until dancers and listeners reach the end. Nazareth's Tango Habanera wrote Rio's salon steps into a piano piece, carrying dance rhythm home. The three show dance music serving and shaping the body.
What to listen for
Listen to the bass accent, syncopation, and speed. The secret of dance music often lies off the first beat, and in the moment a dancer lands.
