Music and Childhood
Lullabies, children's piano pieces and game songs frame childhood as both memory and adult fantasy.

Question
Childhood does not compose, so almost every piece about it is written by an adult. Do these works record the child, or console the person who writes?
Historical background
Lullabies exist in every culture, sustained by repetition, falling melody, and a light beat. Romanticism imagined childhood as innocence and a lost paradise, and Schumann and Mussorgsky wrote childhood scenes. In the twentieth century, piano teaching and recording made children's music a market of its own.
Key cases
The Chinese lullaby Cuimian ge soothes with repeated short phrases and falling endings. Kind im Einschlummern from Schumann's Kinderszenen uses soft dynamics and suspended harmony for the edge of sleep, while Debussy's Children's Corner turns toys and exercises into concert pieces. The three address the infant, memory, and play.
What to listen for
Hear whether the melody keeps falling, whether the accompaniment rocks like a hand on the back, and whether the music suddenly goes quiet.

Childhood music often borrows the titles of Character Piece; Romantic turned it into memory, and the Piano placed the child on the bench.
