Michael Praetorius

The Wolfenbüttel Kapellmeister who organised Lutheran song in nine volumes

Who he was

Michael Praetorius (1571–1621) was a Kapellmeister and theorist at German Protestant courts. He was born in Thuringia, the son of a theologian, and from the 1590s worked at the Wolfenbüttel court, first as organist and from 1604 as Kapellmeister, while also writing for churches in Magdeburg and elsewhere. He left nine volumes of Musae Sioniae containing over a thousand chorale settings, and the three volumes of Syntagma musicum, which record the instruments, pitch and performance habits of his time.

His place

He was the organiser of German church music after the Reformation. The chorale repertory of the Protestant states was scattered and uneven; Praetorius collected the tunes, arranged them, and sorted them by number of voices, occasion and difficulty so that a small-town church could find something singable. Syntagma musicum is closer to a reference work: he drew the instruments and listed their ranges and uses, and anyone studying Renaissance instruments still depends on those plates.

What to hear

Listen first for answering groups. His many-voiced motets often alternate two bodies of sound, one finishing and the other taking up the phrase above or below, which makes a dialogue. Then listen for how a chorale is handled. The same tune, Es ist ein Ros entsprungen, survives in settings from two voices to many, with the melody in different places and different amounts of ornament, so what you hear is the arranger's choice. Finally listen for the other side of his work. Terpsichore is entirely French dance music, with displaced accents and a light step, a contrast to the church volumes.

Influence

His arrangements widened the Lutheran chorale from unison congregational song into polyphonic choral music, and Bach's chorale settings continue the same line. Syntagma musicum preserves instrument shapes and playing instructions and remains a primary source for instrument history. When Renaissance Christmas music is programmed today, the choices still tend to come from these volumes.
