Johanna Kinkel

Bonn-born songwriter who fled to London after the 1849 revolution

Who he was

Johanna Kinkel (1810–1858) was born in Bonn, née Mockel, and learned piano and composition as a child, playing in public while still young. Her first marriage was unhappy; in 1843 she married the art historian and poet Gottfried Kinkel. After the failure of the 1849 revolution her husband was imprisoned, and she fled with her children to London, living by teaching, writing and composing. She died in London in 1858.

His place

Kinkel sits where German domestic song meets the revolutionary years. Her songs are mostly strophic, easy to remember, with piano parts that make no display, suited to singing at the keyboard in a drawing room; beside Schubert and Schumann they lean closer to folk song and choral tradition. She also wrote on music education, discussing how children should learn piano and singing, which was unusual among women composers of the time.

What to hear

Listen first for how the piano paints. Die Lorelei sets Heine's poem over arpeggios that never stop moving, like the Rhine; when the voice enters the arpeggios continue and simply leave the middle register free, so the accompaniment describes without crowding. Then hear the handling of stanzas: the Wiegenlied is short and its tune repeats, and the second time relies on changes of dynamics and colour to avoid monotony. Then take dance as a genre. The Gondellied rocks in six-eight, the accompaniment setting the mood before the voice enters, almost speaking from a boat. Finally listen for harmonic turning: Liebesmacht moves between major and minor, so the same line of poetry returns in a different colour.

Influence

Kinkel's music survives mainly through songbooks and anthologies. The output is small, yet it records a precise position: a German woman composer writing through revolution and exile. Her songs set folk simplicity beside the piano writing of art song and gave mid-nineteenth-century domestic music a model; her writings on teaching left a professional record beyond composition. Her songbooks have been re-edited in recent years and recordings are beginning to appear.
