Friedrich Burgmüller

A German piano teacher in Paris whose studies each carry a title and a picture

Who he was

Johann Friedrich Franz Burgmüller (1806–1874) was born in Regensburg, where his father worked in the theatre orchestra. He studied violin with Spohr and theory with Hauptmann, moved to Paris in the 1830s, and lived there as piano teacher, composer and arranger; he died at Beaulieu near Nice in 1874. In Paris he earned his living mainly by teaching and by arranging operas for publishers. His younger brother Norbert was also a composer and died young in 1836.

His place

He belongs to the Parisian Romantic generation, in the same city as Chopin and Liszt, but chose teaching and the salon. Paris in the 1830s was Europe's piano centre, with publishers, a conservatory and salons forming a complete market. Op. 100 wraps technical tasks in titled pieces, so that a pupil works on fingers and on character at once. Compared with Czerny's plain exercises, Burgmüller cares more for expression and stage gesture, which is why his books stayed in classrooms. He also wrote opera fantasies that drew audiences with the most popular tunes of the day.

What to hear

Listen first for title and character: every piece in Op. 100 has a name, such as the Arabesque or the Pastorale, and the figure becomes a picture. The two can be compared, one light and quick, the other joined into a single line. Then for melody and accompaniment: in Op. 105 the right hand sings and the left must yield without losing the beat. Next, rhythm: the syncopations and triplets of Op. 109 are more complex, and accents shift the weight of the phrase. The pieces are short, yet each demands a complete musical reading. Finally, opera arrangement: the Ernani fantasy Op. 92 breaks Verdi's tunes apart and rebuilds them, joining several themes into one bravura line.

Key works

Influence

His studies are the first named teaching pieces for many children, and they shaped later writing that joins technical training to the titled character piece. Op. 100 remains a standard beginner's book in East Asia. He gave the exercise expression and story for the first time, instead of mere repetition of the fingers.
