Johann Nepomuk Hummel
Mozart's pupil and Beethoven's contemporary who systematised piano technique

Who he was
Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778–1837) was born in Pressburg, today's Bratislava. A child prodigy, he was taken on by Mozart as a pupil and lived in Mozart's household before touring Europe with his father. As an adult he succeeded Haydn at the Esterházy court, then directed music in Stuttgart and Weimar, and in later life was among the most respected pianists in Europe.
His place
He stands between Classicism and Romanticism, competing with Beethoven in the same city. Beethoven wrote blunt, structural music; Hummel wrote round, polished music that wins through ornament and tone colour. He walked in Beethoven's funeral procession and taught a whole generation of pianists; his piano method turned technical training into a system and shaped nineteenth-century playing.
What to hear
Listen first for ornament: Hummel's melodies usually carry a fine layer of figuration, like braid on a hem. Then for arpeggiated accompaniment: the left hand spreads chords while the right hand sings. Next, chromatic colour: he likes to slip ambiguous harmony into Classical syntax, so that a bright passage suddenly darkens. Finally, his cadenza for Mozart: a pupil speaking alone inside his teacher's concerto, the most direct conversation between them.
Key works
- Piano: Sonata No. 5 Op. 81, Sonata No. 2 Op. 13, Rondo brillant Op. 109
- Concertos: Piano Concerto in A minor Op. 85, Trumpet Concerto in E-flat
- Chamber: Septet Op. 74
- Teaching: A Complete Theoretical and Practical Course on the Art of Piano Playing
Influence
Hummel's playing and teaching carried Viennese piano style to Weimar and across central Europe; a whole generation of pianists, Liszt among them, drew on his technique. He reminds us that Classicism and Romanticism are not a cliff but a corridor with a handrail.
