Huangmei Opera

A tea-picking opera shaped in Anqing, turning folk tunes into banqiang form with gaohu accompaniment.

Time and place

Huangmei opera grew from tea-picking tunes around Huangmei in Hubei. In the middle and late Qing it took shape in Anqing, Anhui, blending with local flower-drum and folk song, and entered city theatres in the twentieth century. It began with small plays of three roles and later staged full-length works, with plots drawn from legend and everyday life.

Musical features

The singing uses the Anqing dialect and includes pingci, huagiang and caigiang. Pingci carries narrative in broad phrases with varied metre; huagiang is short, leaping and full of vocables. Huagiang suits small domestic plays, while caigiang often appears in lyrical passages. The whole belongs to the banqiang family while keeping qupai elements. A gaohu leads, joined by erhu, dizi and percussion, with gongs and drums marking entrances and sections.

Repertoire

The Heavenly Match, The Female Prime Minister, Picking Pigweed and The Couple at the Lanterns are the most performed. Most were rearranged in modern times, and their singing differs from early village versions.

What to listen for

Follow how pingci pushes the story forward line by line, then hear the leaps and vocables of huagiang. The gaohu's slides as it shadows the voice are central to the style, while the drums signal a change of section.

Common misunderstandings

A common mistake is to identify Huangmei opera with the tea-picking opera of Huangmei County in Hubei. The two share roots but are different genres. Nor is the filmed Heavenly Match the only standard; earlier singing was plainer and heavier in dialect.
