North China Folk Songs

North China's plain and mountain songs, where Kaihua diao and Zou Xikou share leaps and falling endings.

Time and place

North China folk songs come from Hebei, Shanxi, Beijing and Tianjin. The plains favour xiaodiao and yangge, the Taihang and Yan mountains favour mountain songs and kaihua tunes, and narrative songs such as Zou Xikou travelled along trade routes. Town and village repertories flowed into one another.

Musical features

Xiaodiao are mostly in duple time with neat phrases. Fourth and fifth leaps are followed by stepwise motion, and endings often slide down. Shanxi kaihua tunes typically use two balancing phrases. Yangge is danced to gongs and drums with a sharp beat. Seven- and six-note scales are more common than in Jiangnan, and strong speech stress gives the lines a harder edge. The same tune is sung differently on plain and mountain: neater on the plain, freer in the hills.

Repertoire

Jasmine Flower, Little Cabbage, Zou Xikou, Dushan Xiaodiao and Kaihua Diao are widely known. The Hebei and Jiangnan readings of Jasmine Flower differ sharply.

What to listen for

Hear how a leap is cushioned by stepwise motion, then how the phrase slides down. In yangge, follow the gong and drum pattern against the steps. In narrative songs, hear how duoju cuts a long story into short units.

Common misunderstandings

A common mistake is to think North China has only xiaodiao. Mountain songs, yangge and work songs are just as common. Zou Xikou is not Shanxi alone; Hebei and Shaanxi have songs on the same theme. Kaihua diao is not a flower but a type of two-phrase tune that opens with a flower image.
