House
Chicago club music on a four-on-the-floor pulse, built from drum machines, synth bass and sampled voices
Related
House is Chicago club music from the 1980s that put disco loops, synth bass and drum machines on a four-on-the-floor pulse.
Origins and era
The Warehouse, opened in 1977, gave Frankie Knuckles a room to re-edit disco, and the club gave the style its name. Ron Hardy took over at the Music Box with harder drums, longer stretches and tape edits. Jesse Saunders' On and On from 1983 is often called the first released house record; between 1984 and 1986 Larry Heard and Marshall Jefferson fixed the recipe of piano, synth bass and sampled female voices, and small labels such as Trax sold twelve-inch singles into Europe. After 1986 New York and New Jersey garage split off, Tony Humphries pushed the voice forward in Newark, and in 1988 British acid house carried the Chicago sound back into warehouses.
What you hear
Tempos sit mostly between 118 and 125 BPM. The kick lands on every beat, open hi-hats fall off the beat, claps usually mark two and four, and the snare sometimes gives way to the clap entirely. Synth bass plays short repeated figures, chords favour minor sevenths and ninths, and piano or electric piano only drops short stabs. Voices are usually sampled female lines, repeated until they work as an instrument. Tracks grow by adding and removing layers, eight or sixteen bars at a time, and DJs align two records by their drums to stretch the night.
Key figures
Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy shaped the club night itself, Larry Heard set the direction of deep house with soft chords and bass, and Marshall Jefferson's piano plus Jesse Saunders' drum-machine singles turned house into records that could be sold. DJ Pierre and Phuture made acid house in 1987 with the sliding TB-303. In New York Todd Terry brought sample collages, and Masters at Work kept the Latin and soul thread.
Lineage
Disco, Philadelphia soul, funk and Italo disco feed in; acid house, deep house, New York garage, Detroit techno and later dance music come out. Its core is not one machine but the shaping of a club loop into a structure you can return to.
Common misunderstandings
House is not a blanket term for all dance music; tempo, drum pattern and harmony have edges. Nor was it invented in Europe, since it took shape in Black and gay clubs in mid-1980s Chicago. It is also not wordless looping, because house has always leaned on voices and song structure, and deep house can sit near 110 BPM, so speed alone never defines it.
