Henan Zhuizi

Henan zhuizi pairs a bowed zhuihu with clappers, one singer taking many roles in central-plains tales

Time and place

Henan zhuizi formed around Kaifeng in the late Qing, joining daojing, yinggeliu and sanxianshu, and taking its name from the lead zhuihu fiddle. Early in the twentieth century it followed the railways to Tianjin, Beijing, Shanghai and Wuhan, becoming one of the most widely spread northern genres.

What happened

Daojing sang Taoist tales, yinggeliu and sanxianshu sang long folk narratives; once merged, the singing settled under the zhuihu and the repertory widened from the supernatural to history and household life. One performer stands, clappers in the left hand, a foot-operated clapper below, gesturing with the right, dividing roles in the voice. Traditional items include Stealing Pomegranates, Borrowing a Hairpiece, The Double-Locked Cabinet, The Black Donkey, Li Kui Seizes Fish and Zhaojun Leaves the Frontier.

Musical features

The singing is banqiang, slow board for narration, fast for pushing on, stacked lines to close, with an introduction and closing tune. The zhuihu leads, its snake-skin soundbox giving a voice-like tone that can slide into laughter or weeping; clappers and foot clapper mark the beats as the singer accompanies herself. Lines run seven or ten characters on the thirteen rhymes in Henan dialect, with clear voiced and voiceless initials of the central-plains pronunciation. One singer takes many roles by voice and gesture.

What to listen for

Begin with Henan Xiao Erjie sifu, a domestic piece that shows slow-board unfolding; hear how phrase ends close. Then Qiao qinglang, noting Henan phrasing and the upward flung tail. Qin Qiong da ma gan lucheng is a long historical item; hear how a few lines of praise set a character's entrance. All three are folk songs, not recordings by zhuizi artists.

Common misunderstandings

Henan zhuizi is often confused with Yuju or Henan quju. Zhuizi is storytelling, one singer many roles, standing or seated, led by the zhuihu; Yuju is opera with role types, gongs and movement; quju builds on quzi tunes. All three use Henan speech but are separate systems.
