The Guqin Tradition

With jianzipu tablature and three kinds of string sound, the guqin became China's classic solo tradition of the literati.

The guqin has seven strings and a soft voice, yet it sits at the centre of Chinese literati music. Notation, finger technique and states of mind are bound into a solo tradition.

History

Qin-type instruments predate the Qin dynasty; a ten-string example from Marquis Yi of Zeng's tomb shows an early, unfixed form. By the Han the seven-string, thirteen-hui qin had taken shape, and Wei-Jin players passed down pieces such as Guangling San. Tang player Cao Rou devised jianzipu; later schools included Zhe, Yushan and Guangling. In 2003 UNESCO listed the qin as intangible heritage.

The instrument and its playing

The qin has no frets or bridges; thirteen studs mark the positions. The right hand plucks with to, bo, mo, tiao, gou and ti; the left hand joins notes with yin, nao, chuo and zhu. Open strings sound broad, stopped strings warm, harmonics bright. Jianzipu records string, position and finger but not exact duration, so a score must be realised through dapu.

Repertoire

Core pieces include Flowing Water, Guangling San, Wild Geese over the Sand, Three Variations on Plum Blossom, Three Refrains at Yangguan and Clouds over the Xiao and Xiang. Flowing Water paints the current with rolling glissandi; Wild Geese uses harmonics for the flock.

What to listen for

Hear the open string's space, then the left hand's slide, then the harmonic that lights a phrase ending. Do not count beats; follow the breath. The library's Gao Shan Diao and Yang Guan Ge are folk songs, not qin recordings.

Common misunderstandings

The qin is often confused with the guzheng, or assumed to play only five notes. It can handle seven-note scales and modulation, and was never confined to literati. Its small sound is an indoor aesthetic, not a defect.
