Origins and era

In late-1980s Seattle, bands formed a scene around Sub Pop and college radio. In 1991 Nirvana's Nevermind took it to the global charts, and underground music entered the mainstream view.

What you hear

Listen for dynamics. Verses pull back, guitar clean or lightly distorted and drums held down; choruses open suddenly into a wall of distortion and shouting. Guitars were sometimes tuned down, riffs slow and heavy, solos rare. Drums fill out in the chorus with a loud snare. The voice is rough but the melody stays clear, and a half-time feel is common.

Key figures

Nirvana hid pop melody inside noise, Pearl Jam took it to stadium scale, Soundgarden brought metal weight, and Alice in Chains kept a slower, darker side. Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone supplied the early scene.

Lineage

Heavy metal, punk, hardcore and indie rock feed in; post-grunge and 1990s alternative rock come out. Seattle labels and clothing became global signs.

Common misunderstandings

Grunge is not one fixed sound, since Seattle bands differ widely. Nor is it slapdash, as production was often refined. Reducing it to 1990s fashion misses the dynamic design and the independent labels.
