George Gershwin

The Broadway songwriter who brought jazz into the concert hall

Who he was

George Gershwin (1898–1937) was an American composer and pianist. Born in Brooklyn to Russian Jewish immigrants, he worked at fifteen as a song plugger for a Tin Pan Alley publisher, became famous on Broadway, and carried the language of jazz into the concert hall. He died of a brain tumour at thirty-eight.

His place

Gershwin stands where the Jazz Age meets classical music. In 1924 Paul Whiteman's band premiered Rhapsody in Blue in Grofé's orchestration, and overnight "American music" had an orchestral voice of its own. The Concerto in F, An American in Paris and the opera Porgy and Bess went on to fold blues, ragtime and Broadway melody into large forms.

What to hear

Listen first for blue notes: Gershwin often lowers the third and seventh, so a major key carries a trace of sorrow. Then hear syncopation and drive: the piano entry in Rhapsody in Blue does not wait for the beat but shifts the accent onto weak beats. Finally listen for long lines: The Man I Love began as a song, and its piano version keeps a singer's breath.

Influence

After Gershwin, American composers no longer had to choose between European tradition and homegrown popular music; Bernstein, Copland and countless film scores passed through the door he opened. He made jazz a language for the concert hall without losing the sound of the street.
