Franz Hitz

A Swiss-born salon pianist in France who published hundreds of drawing-room pieces

Who he was

Franz Hitz (1828–1891) was born in Aarau, Switzerland, studied piano at the Paris Conservatoire with Pierre Zimmermann, and began publishing in his early twenties. He settled in Honfleur in Normandy, lived by writing and publishing piano music, and died there. His opus numbers run past four hundred, almost all for solo piano, with mostly French titles — Ballet des ondines, Pluie de soleil, Danse des Guarany.

His place

By his time the piano was standard furniture in middle-class parlours, and publishers needed short, attractively titled pieces that amateurs could manage. Hitz wrote for exactly that market. He turned out waltzes, polkas, galops, barcarolles and character pieces, three to five minutes each, with illustrated covers. History tends to skip this repertoire, yet it accounts for most piano playing of the period. His harmony takes no risks, his rhythms are plain, and the effect comes from texture and register.

What to hear

Listen first for the dance skeleton. Ballet des ondines is a waltz: one chord per bar in the left hand, decoration high in the right, and the shine is made from very little. Then for title against texture. Pluie de soleil uses fast arpeggios and staccato sparks; Danse des Guarany uses dotted figures and syncopation to sound South American. Hear one composer changing masks. Next, the middle section: almost every piece turns to a new key, broadens the melody, then returns. Finally, economy of the hand. He rarely asks for wide leaps or octave volleys; the effect comes from even figuration and clear voices.

Influence

His pieces sold well in France and Britain and are now barely recorded; his name survives on old title pages. Salon music was the interface between the piano industry and amateur players, and composers like Hitz packaged technique with pleasure for several generations of home players. The question they leave is practical: how does a three-minute piece make someone want to play it again?
