César Franck
A church organist who brought cyclic form into the French concert hall

Who he was
César Franck (1822–1890) was born in Liège, studied there and in Paris, and settled in Paris for good. For decades he played the organ at Sainte-Clotilde, where the Cavaillé-Coll instrument became his laboratory; from 1872 he taught organ at the Paris Conservatoire, and d'Indy, Chausson and Duparc came out of his class.
His place
Franck is a central figure of late French Romanticism, yet he worked like a church musician: no operas, no chasing of applause, only patient polishing in organ music, chamber music and piano pieces. He made cyclic form his signature, letting one theme return transformed across a whole work and stitching the piece into a single object. In the 1880s he produced a piano quintet, a violin sonata and a symphony in quick succession, and was widely recognised only late in life.
What to hear
Listen first for the return of the theme: the opening phrase of Prélude, Choral et Fugue comes back in different dress in the fugue and at the end. Then organ-like sonority: thick chords and continuous bass give even the piano the space of a church. Next, chromatic harmony: chords slide hand in hand, Wagnerian ambiguity inside French syntax. Finally, slow sincerity: Franck's slow movements make no effect; they simply say one thing at great length.
Key works
- Piano: Prélude, Choral et Fugue; Prélude, Aria et Final
- Orchestral: Symphony in D minor, Symphonic Variations
- Chamber: Violin Sonata in A, Piano Quintet
- Organ: Three Chorals
Influence
Franck's class became the organising core of French music; d'Indy and Chausson turned it into the Société Nationale de Musique, and his cyclic method was widely imitated. He brought an organist's aesthetic into the concert hall.
