The Eroica Without a Dedication
In 1804 Vienna Beethoven struck Napoleon's name from the Eroica, and the symphony began to stand on its own.

One erased dedication page explains more about 1804 than any harmonic analysis, because it shows a composer deciding whom his music was for.
Time and place
Vienna, 1804. Beethoven rehearsed the new symphony at Prince Lobkowitz's palace, and the title page carried a dedication to Bonaparte. The work reached the public at the Theater an der Wien on 7 April 1805, by which time the dedication had changed.
What happened
Beethoven finished the symphony, later numbered third, in early 1804. His pupil Ferdinand Ries recalled that the page bore Napoleon's name and that news of the imperial coronation in May 1804 enraged Beethoven, who struck the name out. The published score of 1806 calls the work a heroic symphony composed to celebrate the memory of a great man. The familiar story of a page torn in half is later embroidery; the manuscript shows scraping and overwriting. What matters is the scale the music already had. The first movement runs longer than many symphonies of the day, the second is a funeral march, and the finale builds variations on the bass line of his ballet The Creatures of Prometheus.
What changed
The dedication moved from a living politician to the memory of a great man, an empty seat the listener could fill. Music stopped being an ornament commissioned by a patron or a soundtrack to an event and became a place where a composer judged history. The heroic symphony, the funeral march and the habit of putting a personal stance into large instrumental form all took legitimacy from this moment. Publishers and audiences began to treat the work itself, not its occasion, as the thing worth arguing about. Patronage survived, but it lost the power to define what a piece meant.
Listen for the turn
Begin with the Variations and Fugue in E flat, Op. 35, where that bass line and harmonic frame already carry a set of piano variations; by 1802 the frame was itself a subject. Then hear the piano reduction of the Third Symphony, where the frame is stretched into a huge development, cut into fragments, pushed into remote keys and brought back. Finally the Appassionata sonata, written in 1804 and 1805, keeps the same unbroken drive and abrupt stops at the keyboard. Heard together, they show scale becoming an attitude rather than a size.
