Edward Elgar

The late Romantic who brought English music back into European view

Who he was

Edward Elgar (1857–1934) was the leading English composer of the late Romantic era. He was born near Worcester, where his father kept a music shop and played the church organ. Largely self-taught, he worked as a local player and organist until the Enigma Variations made him famous in his early forties.

His place

Elgar brought English music back into European view at the start of the twentieth century. The Enigma Variations portray friends, The Dream of Gerontius sets a Catholic deathbed prayer as an oratorio, and the Pomp and Circumstance marches became the sound of British public ceremony. He wrote imperial grandeur and chamber intimacy alike; the late Cello Concerto is especially sombre.

What to hear

Listen first for the changing faces of the Enigma theme: each variation returns as another friend, and the fourteenth writes grief in strings. Then hear the noble posture: Elgar often marks nobilmente, and his rising lines are neither hurried nor showy. Finally listen for late quiet: the viola solo that opens the Cello Concerto sounds like a person beginning to speak alone.

Influence

After Elgar, composers such as Vaughan Williams and Holst continued to build an English style; his marches remain the music of graduations and the Last Night. He let English music stand in the square and whisper in the room.
