Don Giovanni Premieres in Prague

Prague, 1787: Mozart turns comic opera into psychological drama.

Prague wanted an opera about punishment.

Time and place

29 October 1787, Estates Theatre, Prague. Mozart conducted the premiere, and Da Ponte wrote the libretto. The city already loved Figaro, so Bondini asked for another opera.

What happened

The plot runs from Don Giovanni's intrusion and the killing of the Commendatore to the statue's visit and his descent into hell. Mozart kept the patter, ensembles and buffoonery of comic opera, but made them serve fear and punishment. The first-act finale puts seven characters on stage at once; in the second act the Commendatore's bass presses down like a wall.

What changed

Opera was no longer entertainment. Don Giovanni is both a seductive antihero and a criminal who must be punished, and the audience must choose between laughter and unease. Mozart showed that comic opera could hold death, that an ensemble could carry the climax, and that one chord could change a relationship. The road leads to character opera.

Listen for the turn

Begin with the overture's heavy chords. Then hear the duet with Zerlina: the lighter the tune, the clearer the threat. Finally listen to the finale, where the bass line stops moving and the music closes the door.

This turn belongs to Classical and connects Opera, Aria and Overture.
