Cyril Scott

English impressionist who wrote exotic piano miniatures and books on theosophy

Who he was

Cyril Scott (1879–1970) was born at Oxton in Cheshire and went as a young man to the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt, where he studied with Iwan Knorr alongside Grainger, Quilter and Balfour Gardiner in the so-called Frankfurt Group. He lived by composing and writing, publishing poetry, novels and books on theosophy and alternative medicine, and died in 1970, by then almost forgotten by the musical world.

His place

He was the most thoroughgoing English impressionist, reaching whole-tone and pentatonic scales at almost the same moment as Debussy while keeping a Romantic warmth of melody. His piano miniatures were common in English salons and examination lists in the early twentieth century, and Lotus Land became almost a second name for him. Unlike Vaughan Williams he had no interest in folk song; his subjects were the exotic, harmonic colour and mysticism. He also published pamphlets on scales and harmony that joined the polemics around new music.

What to hear

Listen first for the colour of chords. He stacks ninths, elevenths and bitonal layers, so that changing the upper chord over one bass alters the light. Then pentatonic and whole-tone mixed: the tune of Lotus Land sounds Eastern because of scale choice, not because a folk song is quoted. Then harmonic stillness — in Sphinx the harmony barely moves, and register and dynamics create the illusion of approach. Finally the shape of a miniature, where one short motive is recoloured rather than developed.

Influence

In his lifetime Scott influenced a number of English composers and left a mark on the harmonic taste of jazz and light music; after the war his reputation fell fast and he was filed as a salon composer. Yet he was among the first in Britain to treat harmony as colour, and that habit never left English music, only changed its name. In recent years pianists have begun recording the miniatures again, and the estimate is slowly changing.
