Country rock fits country picking, harmony and storytelling into a rock drum kit and electric guitar.
Origins and era
In the mid-to-late 1960s the Byrds put country songs into a rock line-up in Los Angeles, and the Flying Burrito Brothers and Gram Parsons pushed the blend further. In the 1970s the Eagles took it to the charts and brought Nashville and Los Angeles studios closer.
What you hear
Listen to the drums: snare on two and four, kick and bass on one and three, like a slow train. Guitar runs from clean picking to compressed electric, with slide and pedal steel as common colours. Voices often harmonize in a group, melodies stay simple and phrase endings clean. Tempos are medium-slow, arrangements leave space and solos are short.
Key figures
Gram Parsons brought country sincerity into rock, the Byrds set the template with twelve-string guitar and harmony, and the Eagles made melody and production brighter. Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt entered the crossing from the country side.
Lineage
Country music, folk rock and 1960s Los Angeles studio craft feed in; Americana, alt-country and 1990s country pop come out. Two audiences began to share one record.
Common misunderstandings
Country rock is not country with distortion; the point is the division of roles between line-up and beat. Nor is it one Eagles sound, since bar-room rock and bluegrass edges both appear. Calling it a country betrayal misses how it repaired both traditions.
